Trace the changing fortunes of tribal sovereignty from the 1880s through the 1970s. To what extent were Indian nations able to escape colonialism and exercise self-government during this period? What obstacles did they face on the road to self-determination, and how successful were they in overcoming those? Did all Indians define "self-determination" in the same terms?
