As someone who has ample supplies of both virtues, I would say that you won't get far with just intelligence or just manliness. Intelligence without discipline or guts gets you a masters degree in art history and a handful of food stamps. Guts and discipline without intelligence will get you a tough, painful life of manual labor. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but having done it myself, there is nothing inherently noble in it either.
